It is the magic staff of Iceland, similar in shape to the helmet of awe, but while each helmet has the same arm, the arm of the Vegvisir is completely different. The Icelandic symbol is a visual spell to prevent getting lost (especially at sea) - which was very, very important to the Vikings.
